SEO or Google Ads?
If you run a trade business, you’ve probably been told you “need to be on Google.” What people don’t always explain is that there are two very different ways to get there: SEO (showing up in the free, organic results and on Google Maps) and Google Ads (paying to appear at the top when someone searches).
Both can bring in enquiries. The right place to start depends on your budget, how quickly you need work, and how much capacity you have to take on new jobs.
How SEO works for a trade business
SEO is about making your website and Google Business Profile the most useful, relevant answer when someone nearby searches for your service. That usually means clear service pages, pages for the areas you actually work in, consistent business details, genuine reviews and a website that loads quickly on a phone.
The upside is that you don’t pay for each click. Once your pages rank, they can keep bringing in enquiries month after month. The trade-off is time. Organic visibility builds gradually, and how long it takes depends on your competition, your location and the current state of your website.
SEO tends to suit you if:
- You want a steady flow of enquiries over the long term, not just a quick burst.
- You work in a defined set of suburbs and want to own those searches.
- You’d rather build an asset you own than keep paying for every click.
How Google Ads works for a trade business
With Google Ads, you choose the searches you want to appear for, set a budget and pay when someone clicks. Your ad can show up as soon as the campaign is live, which makes it useful when you need work quickly or want to promote a specific, high-value service.
The catch is that results stop when the spend stops, and a poorly set-up campaign can burn money on clicks that were never going to become jobs. Good campaigns are built around the right search terms, sensible targeting, negative keywords and proper conversion tracking, so you can see which clicks turn into calls and form enquiries.
Google Ads tends to suit you if:
- You need enquiries soon, for example to fill a quiet patch or launch in a new area.
- You want to push particular jobs, like emergency call-outs or larger installations.
- You’re comfortable with an ongoing monthly budget and want to see results tracked closely.
The questions that actually decide it
- How soon do you need the phone to ring? If it’s this month, Ads can get you visible faster. If you’re planning for the next year, SEO deserves a bigger share.
- What’s your budget? Ads need ongoing spend for clicks. SEO is mostly an investment in work on your website and online presence.
- Is your website ready? Neither option works well if visitors land on a slow, unclear site with no obvious way to call or enquire. Sometimes the best first step is fixing the website.
- How busy are you already? If you’re booked out, there’s little point paying for more clicks today. Building organic visibility for later may make more sense.
Why many tradies end up using both
SEO and Google Ads aren’t really competitors. A common approach is to use Ads for immediate, targeted enquiries while SEO builds in the background. Over time, as organic visibility grows, the ad budget can often be focused on the most valuable searches instead of everything.
The search-term data from a well-run Ads campaign can also show which searches actually lead to jobs, and that’s useful when deciding which service and suburb pages to build for SEO.
A note on promises
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a number-one ranking or a fixed number of leads. Results depend on factors outside any agency’s control, including demand, competition, budget, website performance and how enquiries are handled. What a good partner can do is explain the work, track what can be measured reliably and keep improving based on the data.
Where to start
If you’re not sure which way to go, start by looking at three things: how visible you are for your main services today, how well your website turns visitors into enquiries, and what your realistic budget and timeline are. That picture usually makes the answer obvious.
